SOMATIC THERAPY

Somatic Therapy is a form of body-centred Therapy that explores the connection between the mind and body regarding the psychological past. It primarily focuses on bodily sensations, rather than thoughts and memories, to help treat mental and physical stress and trauma. Somatic therapists use physical techniques, such as deep breathing, relaxation exercises, and other physical movements, to help release pent-up tension that negatively affects physical and emotional well-being.

Benefits of Somatic Therapy

  1. Releases Stored Tension: Somatic Therapy assists in releasing tension, pain, and trauma that have been physically stored in the body’s tissues, which often contributes to emotional and physical discomfort.

  2. Improves Self-Awareness and Mindfulness: This Therapy increases one’s awareness of the body and its sensations, leading to enhanced mindfulness and a greater understanding of the physical manifestations of stress and trauma.

  3. Enhances Emotional Regulation: By integrating bodily sensations with emotional awareness, Somatic Therapy helps individuals regulate their emotions more effectively.

  4. Supports Trauma Recovery: It is particularly effective in the treatment of trauma, as it addresses the somatic expressions of trauma and helps individuals safely reconnect with their bodies.

Scientific Evidence Supporting Somatic Therapy Somatic Therapy is supported by research in the fields of psychology, neurology, and cognitive neuroscience. Studies have shown that trauma can leave a physiological imprint on the body, which somatic practices can help alleviate. For instance, research published in the Journal of Traumatic Stress demonstrates that somatic techniques can significantly reduce symptoms of PTSD by assisting individuals to re-establish a sense of physical safety and control.

Further evidence from neurobiological studies suggests that somatic practices can help regulate the autonomic nervous system, reducing the hyperarousal associated with PTSD and other anxiety disorders. These findings are complemented by brain imaging studies that show changes in brain areas related to emotional regulation and stress response following somatic Therapy.
